The earliest recorded history of the property dates back to the 1920s when Karl Warnecke, tore down the 9-pin bowling alley that stood in place of the present-day restaurant, to build his new home and a bude, a small room with domino tables.
In 1934, the home, owned by Karl Warnecke, was transformed into the first drive-in grocery store in Texas by August, Karl Warnecke's adopted son, and Emma, Warnecke's wife. People would drive up to the store and purchase groceries, meat, sandwiches, barbecue items, tamales, fishing baits, tube rentals, and gas.
In 1984, the drive-in grocery store was closed down and was followed by a change of ownership. A number of restaurants opened in the 1980s and 1990s without much success.
In the year 2000, the property was purchased by Vicki and Hector Monarrez and Union Street Station began. Hector was a remarkable chef and very quickly, the restaurant built a reputation of serving the best breakfast and lunch in New Braunfels.
In 2015, John and Sandra Stevens purchased the property and business, and renamed it Union Station Diner. We continue to delight our customers with a family friendly atmosphere, great food and service.
